How to choose a dehumidifier: two steps

Choosing the right DanVex dehumidifier comes down to two decisions: the drying technology your environment needs, and your installation layout. Settle both and only capacity sizing remains.

1. Technology — condensation or adsorption. Ambient conditions decide the drying method:

  • Condensation (refrigerant cycle) — the efficient choice in practice from +15 °C upwards with a target above 35–40% RH; covers most pools, warehouses, production halls and occupied spaces.
  • Adsorption (desiccant) — the right choice below +15 °C or below 35% RH, where condensation loses efficiency. The AD range dries with a silica-gel rotor down to −20 °C and below 20% RH.

2. Installation — how the unit enters the building. DD, DD-F and DD-FX disappear into the building through ductwork, with DD-FX adding heating, cooling and humidification; wall/floor DEH-WP takes pool and commercial installations inside the room; mobile industrial DEH-i and stationary DEH-K cover field work and permanent duty; the compact DEH-1000P covers plug-and-play mobile tasks. Capacity runs in a continuous ladder up to 1000 L/day across these lines, and the AD adsorption range (up to 36 kg/h) covers the cold, low-humidity edge. What is the difference between condensation and adsorption dehumidifiers?
Both remove moisture, but by different physics, and each has its operating window. Condensation dehumidifiers (refrigerant cycle) — DanVex DEH-WP, DEH-1000P, DEH-i, DEH-K, DD, DD-F and DD-FX — cool air below its dew point; water condenses and drains away. They are efficient and cheapest to run at +15…+35 °C with a target above 35–40% RH; below +5 °C or below 35% RH their efficiency drops sharply. Adsorption dehumidifiers — the DanVex AD range — bind water vapour on a silica-gel rotor and work down to −20 °C with targets below 20% RH. Choose condensation for pools, warehouses, production and occupied spaces at room temperature; choose adsorption for cold storage, ice rinks, low-dew-point drying and dry pharmaceutical rooms.
How do I choose the right type of dehumidifier for my space?
Start with operating conditions and installation, not capacity. If the space is at normal temperature and needs a target of around 40–65% RH — pools, warehouses, production, museums, homes — a condensation unit is the efficient choice: DEH-WP for wall/floor installation inside the room, DEH-i for temporary or multi-site work, DEH-K for permanent industrial installation, and the ducted DD range for concealed or multi-room distribution (DD-FX adds heating, cooling and humidification). If the space is cold (below +15 °C) or needs very low humidity (below 35% RH) — cold storage, ice rinks, dry rooms — choose the AD adsorption range. How is dehumidifier capacity measured — L/day or kg/h?
Condensation dehumidifier capacity is quoted in litres per day (L/day) at 30 °C / 80% RH — the international standard test condition that allows direct comparison between manufacturers. Adsorption dehumidifiers are usually rated in kilograms per hour (kg/h) — the same physical quantity expressed differently: one kilogram of water equals one litre, and kg/h × 24 = L/day. Actual capacity depends on ambient and operating conditions. For precise sizing in real conditions, request a project calculation rather than relying on the nameplate figure alone.
What size of dehumidifier do I need for my space?
A practical starting point for normal conditions (moderate moisture load, 4–6 m ceilings, ordinary air exchange): one litre per day of capacity for every 1.5–2 m² of floor area — a 300 m² room needs around 150–200 L/day, a 1000 m² site around 500–700 L/day. Requirements rise further for pool halls, food production with wet cycles, plant growing and high-infiltration spaces, where 2–3 times the rule may be needed. Area rules are useful for first screening only; correct sizing is driven by the total moisture load — starting and target humidity, air volume, air-change rate and moisture sources.
